Neutral pion and direct photon production in the SPS energy regime

Description

In this thesis analyses of the production of neutral pions and direct photons are presented. The data were measured by two heavy-ion experiments, the WA98 experiment at the SPS/CERN and the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC/BNL. The analysis of data sets from p+Pb and p+C collisions at √(sNN)=17.4 GeV was described. For both data sets momentum distributions of neutral pions in the pT range from 0.7 to 3.5 GeV/c could be determined. For the production of direct photons upper limits were determined from both data sets. In the PHENIX experiment measurements of Cu+Cu collisions were performed at √(sNN)=22.4 GeV. From these transverse-momentum distributions of neutral pions could be determined for eight different centrality classes in the range up to 5 GeV/c.
