Model of the interaction of cometary atmospheres with the solar wind

Description

A self-consistent mathematical model of solar-wind/cometary-atmosphere (SW/CA) interaction is derived. The model includes bow shock (BS), inner shock (IS), and contact discontinuity (CD) and accounts for SW loading by photoionization of CA neutral particles (dominant in the SW) and CA-ion resonance-charge-exchange effects (dominant in the region between CD and IS). Numerical results for a restricted SW/CA flow problem are presented in graphs. The BS-nucleus distance is shown to depend more on the loading effect than on the CD-nucleus distance. 17 references
