Forest plantations on decontaminated lands

  • 1. Nauchno-Proizvodstvennoe Ob''edinenie Pripyat', Chernobyl' (Ukraine)

Description

The works were done in two stages in 1988-1989. The first one included sand fixation by herb sowing with peat and fertilizer addition in order to stop the deflation process; forest cultures were planted at the second stage. Pine vulgaris, birch and oak selected as the main forest-forming species were planted after land decontamination, which resulted in sharp worsening of forest cultivation conditions. Forest planting works were made at more than 75% of area, where forest was crushed as a result of the accident
