Safety improvements of V-1 Bohunice NPP

Description

This article presents description of: - original project of V-1 from the 60' years; - implementation innovation in the V/1 NPP due to decisions of the nuclear authority in either Czechoslovakia or later in the Slovak Republic. The safety of V/1 Bohunice NPP was improved also so call small reconstruction (probability of active zone severe accident decrease from 1.7 · 10-3 to 8.89 · 10-4 per year, significant enhancement of fire protection, increased tightness of unsealed area). Main reconstruction work was done by Siemens KWU (Basic engineering describes in the article together with results) an by consortium REKON consisting of Siemens KWU and VUJE Trnava (local firm). The article presents summary of international missions and their positive statements. Total reconstruction of V-1 Bohunice NPP is a good example how the Eastern type reactors can be modernized in cooperation with Western firms and how such reactors can achieve internationally accepted level of the nuclear safety at acceptance financial costs.
