Reduced enrichment fuel for research and test reactors (RERTR): a review

  • 1. Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Lucas Heights (Australia)

Description

The background and current status of various studies of fuelling strategies for research and test reactors including the interantional Reduced Enrichment Fuel Program (RERTR) are discussed. It is advocated that providing suitable fuel materials of sufficiently high uranium density are available, almost all research and test reactors traditionally using highly enriched uranium fuel (>80% U235), can be converted to using low enriched fuel without change of core geometry or significant adverse effect on important safety parameters
