Radiation hormesis

Description

The mechanism of hormesis, defined as the stimulus given to any organism by non-toxic concentrations of toxic substances, is considered. Deaths of atom bomb survivors, animal experiments, the cell nucleus repair system and the role of the immune system are considered in relation to effects of low linear energy transfer radiation. Alpha particles and hormesis are discussed in relation to indoor radon and lung cancer. (U.K.)
