Experimental observations on superfluid 3He in fine capillaries

  • 1. Sussex Univ., Brighton (UK)

Description

Some NMR properties of the superfluid 3He confined in 2 μ diameter glass capillaries have been measured in relation to pressure down to about 1 mK, using frequency modulated NMR techniques. The principal aim of this work is to examine the stability of the various textures and phases, which have been predicted to exist in superfluid 3He in restricted geometries. Temperature was measured with a pulsed NMR platinum powder thermometer, and the signal was detected by Fourier transformation techniques to reduce errors from both field drift and electron noise. It was found that the NMR frequency was not appreciably different from those that would be observed in bulk liquid. The results of these experiments are summarized in four figures, and some comparison was also made with the observed results by other groups. (Aoki, K
