Adapting and automating a low-pressure porosimeter

Description

Permeability of porous gas or liquid environments has many fields of application: soil physics, petroleum technology, surface measurements, gas isotope separation, etc. Mercury porosimetry measurement of composite materials required the development of a mechanical device to allow the study of porous materials with very different pore concentrations. The performance of the developed device allows automatic measurement of porous volumes ranging from 50 mm3 in the thin layer to 8000 mm3 in the substrate. Automation removes a particularly tedious job for the operator and ensures a better reproducibility of the measurement protocol. The complementarity of the device's scanning ranges and those of the device described by Sigala allows a lab to obtain pore spectra of materials with radius ranging from 0.30 μm to 15 A. (author)

Abstract (French)

La mesure par porosimetrie mercure de materiaux composites a necessite la mise au point d'un appareillage mecanique autorisant l'etude de corps poreux a concentrations de pores tres differentes. Les performances de l'appareil mis au point permettent la mesure automatique des volumes poreux allant de 50 mm3 dans la couche fine a 8000 mm3 dans le substrat. L'automatisation supprime un travail particulierement fastidieux pour l'operateur et assure une meilleure reproductibilite du protocole de mesure. La complementarite des plages de balayage de l'appareil etudie et de l'appareil decrit par Sigala permet au laboratoire d'obtenir des spectres de pores de materiaux a rayons s'etendant de 0.30 μm a 15 A.
