Description

A possible effect of methotrexate (MTX) and cytosine arabinoside (ara-C) on the induction of early and late delayed radiation damage in the CNS was studied in the rat cervical spinal cord. Male WAG/Rij rats were injected intrathecally (i.t.; between lumbar vertebrae 4 and 5) or intravenously (i.v.) with MTX or ara-C, followed 30 min later by X-irradiation. The different reactions observed during the first six months after treatment are presented. The results suggest that i.t. administered ara-C greatly enhances the effect of radiation on oligodendroglial cells involved in the production and maintenance of myelin. MTX, however, shows no modification of the early delayed radiation response of the rat spinal cord. (Auth.)
