Black hole in galaxy M87: Portrait in the interior

The first "portrait" of a supermassive black hole, located in the center of the elliptical galaxy M87, captured people's imagination earlier last year. The dark region in the middle is not actually the black hole itself, but rather the shadow of the black hole on the bright ring of material. The image will go down in history as one of the most epic photos in space science. The international group Event Horizon Telescope worked for years to accomplish this first black hole image.
