Description

The growth of thin oxide films on a nickel-based alloy under controlled conditions is studied using electron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe techniques. Their structure is correlated with deuterium permeation decrease factors measured on duplicate specimens. Possible reasons are discussed for the improved performance of the preformed oxides, with respect to hydrogen permeation characteristics, when the alloy is exposed in a steam-methane reformer.
