Description
The 8-pi spectrometer collaboration has announced the discovery of two excited superdeformed bands in the nucleus of gadolinium 149. Vibration tests were made during the Christmas shutdown to monitor mechanical motion of the tandem components considered most likely to be causing a 10 Hz spatial motion seen in beams from the tandem. Additional instrumentation leads were installed in the cyclotron to monitor the effects of high-power pi-mode rf heating on the electrostatic deflector. (L.L.)
