An unexpected free radical in radiolysis of aqueous borax solutions

  • 1. Radiation Laboratory, Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Indiana, USA 46556, (United States)

Description

Concentrated boric acid/borate buffer is used as a neutron shim in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) to control the neutron flux. It is generally supposed that this buffer is inert toward water radiolysis. We were surprised to discover a reaction between OH radicals and borate ions that has been overlooked in the past. We estimate it may account for 35% of OH radical reactions at 300 ℃ at the start of a PWR fuel cycle. (author)
