Description
We investigate the charmonium breakup process in a medium of light mesons and its modification due to the Mott effect for the light (pion, rho) and open-charm (D, D*) quark-antiquark states at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. A presented model calculation for the processes J/ψ + π → anti D + D* demonstrates that this Mott effect leads to a threshold effect in the thermal averaged charmonium breakup cross section. We suggest this physical mechanism as an explanation of the anomalous J/ψ suppression phenomenon in the CERN NA50 experiment. (orig.)
