Boron-loaded epoxy material for neutron shielding

Description
Elemental boron in the form of an amorphous submicron powder was added to an epoxy and castings (1/4 - 1/2 inch thick) were molded. Boron loadings of up to 17.43% were achieved. TMA and TGA analyses indicated that the addition of the boron did not significantly affect the thermal performance of the epoxy. The 17.43% boron loading produced a 30% increase in the compressive failure strength and a 70% increase in the compressive modulus. The 17.43% boron-loaded epoxy absorbed 92% of the incident neutrons from a 5-Curie plutonium/beryllium laboratory exposure. The material is under development for neutron shielding on spacecraft to protect human occupants and electronic components. It also has potential applications in nuclear power plants, nuclear-powered submarines, and medical facilities providing neutron radiation therapy
