Report on Hawthorne, Steele and Smidt: irradiation effects of residual elements in reactor pressure vessel steels
Description
This report is a review of experimentation conducted by J.R. Hawthorne, L.E. Steele, and F.A. Smidt, Jr. concerning the deleterious effects of copper (and to a lesser extent phosphorus) in reactor pressure vessel steels. This research was accomplished through the Naval Research Laboratory, and has been reported largely at the biennial conferences of the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee E-10 on Radioisotopes and Radiation Effects. This review examines their progress chronologically from the identification of residual copper radiation embrittlement, to the present copper-vacancy trapping mechanisms
