Problems of decommissioning units 1 and 2 of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant

Units 1 and 2 were put out of operation because of the inadequate state of the reactors, the end of life of the most important thermomechanical systems, and the high economic losses during maintenance and repair. At the time of decommissioning of unit 1 a project for conservation of the reactor and a scientific-technical programme for transferring the unit to a phase of non-operation under surveillance existed. In conformity with that project and programme, the state of the brickwork of reactor 1 after fuel unloading the state of the metal of the most important pipings and of the loading-bearing metal structures of the reactor were examined, the most important thermomechanical equipment and reactor auxiliary systems were preserved to protect them against downtime corrosion, and the first circuit was decontamined. Fuel unloading of unit 2 is now finished, and the preparatory measures to examine the reactor state come to an end. (orig.)
