Introduction to accelerator physics

Creators

  • 1. CERN, 1211 Geneva 23 (Switzerland)

Description

After a brief review of the history of particle accelerators, the acceleration mechanisms and structures are described and a simple analysis is given of longitudinal phase stability and transition. The transverse motion of the beam is dealt with in a similar way with descriptions of the various magnetic lenses and a simple analysis of weak and strong focusing. The effects of field and gradient errors are also described. Finally, the problem of beam stability when the beam is emitting synchrotron radiation is discussed
