Description
Many intermetallic compounds are transformed to amorphous phases via various metastable states by electron or ion irradiations. This paper reviews the phenomena associated with these transformations. The effect of irradiation primarily responsible for the amorphous transformation is the formation of antisite defects. The volume expansion and shear modulus decrease are significant preceding the transformation. The criterion for the amorphous transition will be discussed by considering the difference in enthalpy between amorphous and crystalline states and the enthalpy increase due to irradiation
