Use of the hard superconductor Nb3Sn in microwave resonators

Description
The use of superconductors in microwave resonators leads to a decrease in the wall loss by four to five powers of ten. Whereas the alternating field losses above Bsub(c1) increase strongly with technical frequencies, this does not apply to the microwave region. Compared to the usual niobium which is used at T < 2 K, hard superconductors with high Tsub(c) such as Nb3Sn offer the chance of greater field strengths and higher permissible working temperatures. Measurements on superconducting cavity resonators are reported on with Nb3Sn surfaces. At 4.2 K, the quality was up to 50 times better than with the corresponding Nb resonators. (orig./LH)

Die Anwendung von Supraleitern in Mikrowellenresonatoren gestattet eine Verringerung der Wandverluste um vier bis fuenf Zehnerpotenzen. Waehrend bei technischen Frequenzen die Wechselfeldverluste oberhalb Bsub(c1) stark ansteigen, gilt dies nicht im Mikrowellenbereich. Im Vergleich zu dem bisher ueblichen Niob, das bei T < 2 K betrieben wird, bieten harte Supraleiter mit hohem Tsub(c) wie Nb3Sn die Chance hoeherer Feldstaerken und hoeherer zulaessiger Arbeitstemperaturen. Es wird ueber Messungen an supraleitenden Hohlraumresonatoren mit Nb3Sn-Oberflaechen berichtet. Bei 4,2 K lag die Guete bis um den Faktor 50 hoeher als bei entsprechenden Nb-Resonatoren. (orig.)
