Stabilization of californium(II) in the solid state

  • 1. Oak Ridge National Lab., Tenn. (USA)
  • 2. Tennessee Univ., Knoxville (USA). Dept. of Chemistry

Description

Californium dichloride, CfCl2, has been prepared by hydrogen reduction of CfCl3 at a high temperature (600 deg C). Its identification was based on spectrophotometric analysis by analogy to the known CfBr3/CfBr2 and CfI3/CfI2 systems. The Cf-249 used in this work was obtained from aged Bk-249. The Cf was separated and purified by standard ion-exchange techniques. (T.I.)
