Application of electrical control monitoring system in Sulphur Solidification Building and Storage (SSB) with IEC-61850 communication protocol and modbus based on Modicon M580

Description

The oil and gas industry requires a reliable electrical power system, especially in the sulfur solidification process. The ECMS, especially the Modicon M580 PLC, supports efficient electrical monitoring and control at the sulfur solidification building and storage (SSB) substation. Selection of appropriate communication protocols is very important in ECMS. This protocol is the basis for efficient, reliable and secure data transfer across various systems. The Modbus protocol, although simple, has disadvantages in terms of scalability and limited features. Alternatively, the IEC 61850 protocol offers better integration between connected devices in a wide network, enabling more efficient monitoring. This system consists of hardware and software that work together to collect data, analyze information, and control electrical equipment. This research succeeded in applying an ECMS system that uses a Modicon M580 PLC as a controlling device, as well as integrating communication protocols with Modbus and IEC 61850 for each electrical equipment. This research also discusses the data communication flow in ECMS, the concept of data transmission, and data transmission time for both protocols. Efficient data transmission time and communication system reliability are crucial aspects. Data transmission time using the IEC Protocol from slave to master is 0.01820 s or 18 ms, while data transmission from query to response for the Modbus Protocol is 59.9 ms, so the error percentage from the repetitive time setting time of 60 ms is 0.159 %.
