Effect of particle size on synthesis temperature and mechanism of Y-Fe-Garnet

  • 1. Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

The present work describes the effect that particle size has on reaction temperature and reaction pathway for yttrium iron garnet. The reactant mixtures are taken in bulk as well as nano form and heated upto 1400 °C in a TG/DTA instrument. The TG residues are thereafter analyzed by PXRD for phase composition. It is observed that when taken in the nano- form, the reaction does not exhibit a clear peak for Yttrium Iron Perovskite reaction intermediate. Moreover the peak for garnet formation is shifted towards lower temperature when the reactants are in nano-form. (author)
