Development of Engineered Barrier System Performance

Description

For the purpose of EBS performance enhancement, the manufacturing technique for a disposal canister and buffer was developed, and the thermal performance of the buffer was improved. The performance of EBS will be tested under the extreme conditions such as overheating temperature or earthquakes to show the integrity of EBS. A geological disposal system using the high-efficiency engineered barrier system was developed for the Safety Case. To this end the following research activities are performed. Upgrading of thermal conductivity of the buffer up to 20% -Selection of effective additives to enhance thermal conductivity -Measurement of thermal conductivity and physical properties(hydraulic conductivity, swelling pressure) for new buffer compositions -Manufacture of 1/3 scale earthquake-resistant buffer with high thermal performance. Establishment of a scale-up technology for the manufacture of medium scale(1/3) canisters by CSC equipments -Design of disposal canister and scale-up and Installation of CSC equipments for manufacturing disposal canisters -Development of sealing technique using cold spray technique at a 1/3 scale. Development of analysis tools for THM behavior of EBS and in-situ demonstration facility (DEBS-KURT) for EBS THM performance in KURT -Lab scale TH validation test for the long-term buffer behavior and development of analysis tools -Development of in-situ demonstration facility for EBS THM performance. Performance confirmation of the improved EBS - Manufacture of 1/3 scale disposal canisters and establishment of NDT technique - Lab-scale TH test at overheating conditions and validation of THM modeling techniques - Development of a computer program for corrosion of copper-cast iron disposal canister at KURT conditions. Development of a geological disposal system based on the improved EBS for the Safety Case - Development of a apparatus for shear stress test for improved buffer and the performance test - Assessment of long-term corrosion experiment at KURT - Improvement of a geological disposal system based on the improved EBS.
