Description

Site selection is the first measure for ensuring the nuclear safety of a nuclear power plant during normal operation and accidents. This selection means the solution of complex problems to minimize the mutual influence of the NPP and the site. It is generally recommended that the requirements for NPP siting be legally formulated and standardized, which facilitates and expedites the selection procedure and site approval. In Czechoslovakia site selection is regulated by Regulation No.5 of CzAEC (1979) on general criteria for siting NPPs with regard to nuclear safety. This regulation also includes the requirements concerning population distribution in terms of collective dose values both for normal operation and for accidents. The paper describes the detailed methods for NPP site selection with regard to population distribution and emergency preparedness applied in Czechoslovakia. (author)
