On the possible importance of generalized Lorenz equations in the theory of magneto-hydrodynamic stability

Description

The question of the role of strange attractors in MHD turbulence is treated in the case of an interchange-unstable plasma. Using truncated Fourier expansions, generalized Lorenz equations for N amplitudes are derived. Their solutions are investigated numerically up to N = 136, and compared with results from a fluid code. For the generalized Lorenz equations, strange attractors are found, which indicates that the original MHD equations also possess this type of solution
