Development of Proliferation Resistance Enhanced Pyroprocessing Safeguards and Hot Cell Design Technologies

Description

The purpose of this project is to develop proliferation resistance-enhanced hot cell design and safeguards technologies for an engineering-scale pyroprocessing facility (10 tons of spent fuel per year) by 2016. To achieve this goal, the project involves 1) the development of pyroprocessing PR/PP enhancement technologies, 2) the development of safeguards technologies based on nuclear material accounting and containment/ surveillance monitoring, and 3) the development of a hot cell design concept and safety enhancement technologies. Phase I (2012-2014): Development of proliferation resistance-enhanced safeguards concepts and a safety evaluation methodology for an engineering-scale pyroprocessing facility (10 tons of spent fuel per year) - Development of a PR/PP assessment methodology and PR/PP enhancement technology - Development of core safeguards technology for the pyroprocessing facility - Development of hot cell design requirements and a safety evaluation methodology.
