The clinical analysis of 18F-FDG PET imaging for 14 patients with ascites

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET imaging for ascites. Methods: Fourteen patients with ascites were included in this retrospective study. The gold standard of ascites was either cytology or clinical follow-up and compared to the PET findings. Data were analyzed with SAS 6.12. Results: Of the 14 patients, seven were malignant and seven were benign ascites. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of PET were 5/7, 6/7, 5/6, 6/8 respectively. A longer survival was observed in benign than malignant ascites patients (1 to 36 months vs 3 to 50 months, χ2=4. 42, P<0.05). Conclusions: 18F-FDC PET was helpful in predicting malignant from benign ascites. Patients with benign ascites could have longer survivals than with malignant ascites. (authors)
