Coulomb breakup applications to nuclear astrophysics

Description
The method of Coulomb breakup, applied to the measurement of radiative capture cross sections at thermonuclear energies will be briefly introduced. In the following I will concentrate on a comparison of the experimental requirements for a determination of the astrophysical S-factor using direct reactions and the Coulomb breakup reaction at intermediate energies. Interference of E1 and E2 contributions in both reactions are discussed and illustrated for the case of 7 Be(p,γ)8 B and 12 C(α,γ)16 O. For the latter reaction, the influence of nuclear breakup will also be discussed. Finally, some prospects concerning thermonuclear reactions involving short lived nuclei are given. (author)
