Influence of climatic oscillations in the archaeological sequence on Marajo island, Brazil

Description
Thermoluminescence dates define the durations of five successive archaeological complexes or phases on the island of Marajo, providing a chronology extending from about 34000 B.P. to European contact. A hiatus of 930 + - 300 years coincides with a period of aridity between about 2700 and 2000 B.P. inferred from pollen sequences in various parts of the neo-tropical lowlands, suggesting that Marajo may have been abandoned by pottery-making groups during this interval because of subsistence stress. Datas termoluminescentes definem as duracoes de cinco complexos ou fases arqueologicas sucessivas sobre a ilha de Marajo, fornecendo uma extensao cronoligica de cerca de 3400 anos ao contato europeu. Um hiato de 930 + - 300 anos coincide com um periodo de aridez entre 2700 a 2000 anos inferido das sequencias de polen em varias partes das planicies neo-tropicais sugerindo que Marajo pode ter sido abandonada por artezoes durante esse intervalo por causa da tensao de subsistencia.
