Quench performance of sextupole corrector magnets
Description
The authors report the quench performance of the first four sextupole corrector magnets built by B ampersand W. Three of the four magnets were cold tested at the Central Facility in Waxahachie, TX and are denoted by the nomenclature BWDb2.1-BWDb2.4. Babcock and Wilcox (B ampersand W) and Advanced Interconnect Technology (AIT) have joined in a cooperative effort to develop and build corrector magnets using the Direct Wire technique for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The Direct Wire process uses an automated wiring machine consisting of an ultrasonic head, a precision positioning system, and computerized control. The superconducting wire is fed through the wiring head and under a precision grooved stylus which is excited by ultrasonic transducers. As the wire is guided along a computer controlled path the ultrasonically excited stylus imparts energy to the wire which locally melts an adhesive coating, bonding the wire in place.
