Jc vs. strain investigations of PbMo6S8 and SnMo6S8 wires

  • 1. Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Institut fur Technische Physik, P.O. Box 3640, D-7500 Karlsruhe (Germany, F.R.)

Description

PbMo6S8 and SnMo6S8 monofilamentary wires have been prepared using the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) approach for synthesizing the starting materials. The behavior of the critical current density, Jc, with externally applied tensile strain was investigated for wires with different prestrains. The different prestrain conditions in the wires were realized by varying the content of reinforcing stainless steel with respect to the wire cross section. The strain sensitivity of the upper critical field Bc2 was obtained by extrapolation from Ic vs. B data. The strain sensitivity of Ic and Bc2 in PbMo6S8 wires are comparable to those of Nb3Sn wires. The cosequences for the future technical application in high field magnets are discussed
