Anomalous missing-psub(T) events at the CERN panti p collider: The standard model re-examined

  • 1. Wisconsin Univ., Madison (USA). Dept. of Physics

Description

We systematically investigate the uncertainties in computing the production of Wsup(+-), Z with large transverse momentum in panti p interactions. We argue that the rates for ''anomalous'' lepton-thsub(T)-jet events can be consistent with the standard model prediction for the process anti pp -> W(->lν)+ gluons. As a result we also predict enhanced ''monojet'' cross sections from anti pp -> Z(-> νanti ν)+ gluons, although the overall rate is still somewhat low. This discrepancy would be remedied if there exist more than three light neutrinos, as is predicted by some family-unifying theories. (orig.)
