Van der Waals type model for pp elastic scattering at high energies

  • 1. Punjab Univ., Chandigarh (India)

Description

It is shown that Araki's Van der Waals (VDW) type model used for qualitative explanation of pp elastic scattering at high energies predicts a structure in angular distribution at √s >= 72 GeV which is quite different from the structure at presently available energies. It is further shown that the modified form of this model proposed by Shiohara and Yano to give a quantitative explanation of pp elastic scattering fails to explain the experimental data. Even at presently available energies, it predicts a new structure which is not consistent with experiment. Further modifications are suggested so that, at high energies, the new formula gives a very good agreement between theory and experiment in the range 0 <= -t < 12 (GeV/c)2. (author)
