Unexpected evidence that the main 5d → f transition in atomic uranium lies below the 5d threshold

Description

The 5d adsorption spectrum of atomic uranium in the vapour phase has been observed using synchrotron radiation, with the remarkable result that a single sharp line is observed at the energy of the expected 'giant resonance'. This unexpected behaviour is discussed in relation to wave function collapse for fluorides and metals of the actinide sequence. (author)
