Development and properties of mixed-oxide ion exchangers

Description
The manufacture and properties of several mixed-oxide ion exchangers made of SnO2, TiO2 and MnO2 together with hydrous silica are described. Distribution constants and determinations of exchange capacities show that in many instances the properties of the composites are better than those of the oxides alone. It is also demonstrated that the presence of a chelating agent can greatly reduce the uptake of nuclides. Further work is needed to explain anomalous results, particularly the variation in exchange capacity for different elements and the ability of the oxides to sorb colloidal material in alkaline solution.
