The synthesis and characterisation of magnetites and nickel ferrites

Description

The final stoichiometry of magnetite samples prepared by a precipitation procedure in the absence of air has been found to be highly dependent on the rate of air oxidation after precipitation is completed. Co-precipitated nickel and iron hydroxides and hydrated oxides, which react to form nickel ferrite during high temperature calcination, have been treated hydrothermally in attempts to prepare nickel ferrite at low (< or approx. 300 deg C) temperatures. Transmission 57Fe Moessbauer Spectroscopy has been used to characterise the reaction products in this preliminary study. (author)
