Description

The fission of heavy ions in dielectric solids has been studied by a nuclear track technique. This technique offers a 4 π detection of fission fragments and evaporated particles from the excited compound nuclei formed by interaction of the projectiles with the lighter nuclei constituting the matrix of the dielectric solids. A large number of fork-like events were measured and analyzed into appropriate kinematical parameters with the help of computer programs specially developed for the purpose. Here we present our results for 238U and 209Bi in CR-39 for several energies between 16.7 and 8.4 MeV.u. Some recent findings and future scope of this work have been discussed. (Author)
