Description

The present IRAS images of Comet Tempel 2, obtained on August 28, 1983 at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns, have undergone removal of instrumental effects. The spatial structure in these IR images has been interpreted in light of comparisons with a series of theoretical models based on different dust properties. It is judged that Tempel 2's outer dust coma is dominated by partices of several-mm size, assuming a 1 g/cu cm density, and that a population of particles that are even larger in size forms the so-called dust trail shown by the present images. This richness in large dust grains distinguishes Tempel 2 from other comets subjected to IR imaging observations. 19 refs
