Description
Low alloyed uranium is a potential candidate fuel for research reactors. Moreover, U-Zr system is the important precursor system so far as use of U-Pu-Zr based metallic fuel for fast reactor is concerned. Chemical analysis of U-2wt%Zr samples shows presence of Al and Si, which are supposed to be the main impurities along with oxygen to form the inclusions. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) along with, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) show that the excess amount of Zr, beyond solubility limit, preferentially goes to the inclusion sites to form some complex intermetallic compounds whose structure is yet to be found out
