Protection against ionizing radiation from accelerators

This introduction to fundamentals and measures of radiation protection at accelerators used in natural science research, technology and medical therapy presents the information in step with practice. The main subjects discussed are the following: 1) Accelerator technology; 2) Legal aspects (such as the Radiation Protection Ordinance, licensing procedures, testing and inspection); 3) Structural radiological safety; 4) Nuclear activation processes, radionuclide production; 5) Various technical measures for providing protection from the hazards of radiation; (6) Practical examples (as e.g. electron accelerators for medical applications, cyclotrons, neutron generators). As predominance has been given to practical application, discussion of physical data and principles has been avoided whenever possible. (HP)
