Description

Recent calculations of electron impact excitation rates for transitions in Si XIII are used to determine theoretical intensity ratios α = I(1s21S-1s2p 1P) /I (1s21S-1s2p 3P1), which are suitable as electron density diagnostics for values of Nsub(e) (approx. = 1018 -1024 cm-3) typical of laser produced plasmas. The results are significantly different from those of previous authors, and are in excellent agreement with the observed value of α for a plasma where the electron density has been independently estimated from the Stark broadening of spectral lines.
