Effect of dietary zinc on selenium status
Description
Trace elemental interactions are of nutritional and toxicological importance. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the utility of multiple tracers for interaction research. An important facet of this method was the use of a high-resolution Ge(Li) detector for in vivo whole-body counting. The present work focused on the interaction of selenium and zinc. Selenium is an essential element in man and animals. Under the right circumstances, a deficiency of this element may lead to a variety of diseases, the type depending on the species. These syndromes normally manifest themselves as acute conditions, and have been well described. Less well characterized are the effects at a suboptimal selenium status, and the factors that can lead to this state. This situation has prompted the application of the techniques previously mentioned
