Environmental impact assessment for Olkiluoto nuclear plant

Description
The demand for electricity in Finland is expected to rise from 70 to 78 TWh between 1996 and 2000, increasing to about 92 TWh by 2010. The rise in demand between 2000 and 2010 is equal to an annual electricity output of roughly 2500 MW. Moreover, present contracts under which electricity is imported are due to expire after the turn of the century, leaving an additional deficit of about 1400 MW. This must be covered by new import arrangements or new power plants. In this scenario, the environmental impact assessment for the projected new third nuclear power plant planned for Olkiluoto focuses on the following alternatives: The 'main alternative' is the construction of a nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto with a capacity of 1000-1500 MW
