Neutronic considerations for developing advanced BWR reactors

Description

The main goal of the Advanced High Converter Water Reactor is to increase the conversion ratio. Amelioration of the conversion ratio is only economically reasonable when the specific construction costs of conventional LWR plants remain almost unchanged, i.e., when the major system equipment does not become more complicated and more expensive. Having such boundary conditions in mind, this paper deals with the first neutronics features of the high converter boiling water reactor. The results shows that the physics of this type of reactor is promising. (author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Com o objetivo de aumentar a taxa de conversao dos reatores BWR, foi pesquisado a viabilidade neutronica de um reator BWR avancado ('Advanced Boiling Water Reactor' - ABWR). Devido a heterogeneidade da estrutura do nucleo do reator BWR, foi desenvolvido uma metodologia para minimizar a complexidade de calculo e atender a qualidade dos resultados. Na pesquisa foram realizados estudos para verificar a influencia de diversos parametros geometricos e fisicos. Os resultados revelaram que a viabilidade neutronica do reator conversor avancado e promissora. (autor)
