Characterization and high-temperature phase relations of 3La2O3.WO3 and 5La2O3.2WO3

  • 1. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, 66 - Montlouis (France). Lab. des Ultra-Refractaires

Description

The system La2O3-WO3 was studied in detail by solid state reaction, cofusion, annealing and high-temperature x-ray diffraction. Two cubic fluorite-related phases have been found: 3La2O3.WO3 ans 5La2O3.2WO3. The 3:1 compound has a C-type b.c.. structure. The new compound, 5:2, was identified as a pyrochlore-related f.c.c. structure. The 3:1 compound is stable above 17400C up to the melting point. Below 17400C it decomposes into the 5:2 compound and La2O3. The 5:2 compound is stable up to 17800C, and appears to decompose into the 3:1 compound and the 3:2 compound at higher temperatures.
