Description

In this paper the role played in the theory of β-decay by proton-neutron coherent pairs (bosons) is discussed. It is shown that the observed properties of β-decay in light nuclei are consistent with the proton-neutron boson scheme (IBM-4) and that some features of β-decay in heavy nuclei suggest that these pairs play an important role here too. Experiments to check the boson scheme in heavy nuclei are suggested
