Description

The radiation resistance of Euglena gracilis to γ-rays and ion beams was investigated in order to make it possible to utilize the cells in space environment including cosmic rays in future. RBE based on the killing effect of ionizing radiation was increased with increasing LET and showed its maximum at 196 keV/μm LET. Light-grown cells were more resistant to γ-rays than dark-grown cells, indicating that DNA repair ability would depend on lighting condition during culture. (author)
