Cytogenetic dosimetry for a victim accidentally exposed to 192Ir gamma-rays

  • 1. Institute of Radiation Medicine, Beijing (China)

Description

Cytogenetic dosimetry was performed for a victim who was over-exposed to 192Ir gamma rays. The individual dose was estimated by the yields of dicentrics plus rings. Based on the cytogenetic findings, the equivalent whole body dose was estimated to be 2.9 Gy. This dose was in good agreement with the mean dose calculated from physical measurement and conformable to the clinical diagnosis. Follow-up studies of chromosome aberrations were carried out 31st and 66th days after the accident. It was shown that the yields of dic + r were reasonably constant. A non-Poisson distribution of dic + r and the presence of a few multi-aberrant cells were consistent with the non-uniform exposure. This was a highly inhomogeneously irradiated case
