Parendodontic surgery – curettage and root planing technique: literature review

Introduction: endodontic surgery is a fundamental procedure for the treatment of refractory periapical lesions that have not responded to conventional endodontic therapies. This approach aims to eliminate persistent infections and promote new bone formation, enabling the restoration of oral health and the quality of life for patients. The surgical technique of scaling and root planing (SRP) has emerged as an efficient modality in this context. Objective: this literature review aims to analyze studies that investigated the efficacy of the scaling and root planing technique in endodontic surgery, with a focus on evaluating its effectiveness in periapical healing, infection control, and treatment success rate. Methodology: this literature review was conducted according to a systematic methodology to identify relevant studies on the effectiveness of the scaling and root planing technique in endodontic surgery. The search strategy included major scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, with articles published in the last 5 years. Results: the studies analyzed in this review indicated that the scaling and root planing technique proved to be effective in removing inflamed and contaminated tissues at the root apex. There was a significant improvement in periapical healing and infection control in patients undergoing this procedure. Conclusion: based on the available evidence, the curettage and root planing technique appears to be a promising approach in endodontic surgery. The proper removal of inflamed and contaminated tissues at the root apex contributes to periapical healing and infection control, resulting in a high treatment success rate. (author)
